My Money Week – 29 June to 3 July 2009
Leading Child Trust Fund provider, The Children’s Mutual is pleased to support the Government’s first ever My Money Week – designed to help teach children about the importance and value of money.
Funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, My Money Week is part of the My Money programme. Led by pfeg (Personal Finance Education Group) the awareness week runs from Monday 29 June to Friday 3 July and is a financial education initiative aimed at helping schools to bring money management to life for pupils of all ages.
David White, Chief Executive of The Children’s Mutual and pfeg Board Member says: “It is vitally important that children and young adults are educated as early as possible about money and finance. This will better equip them to make smart choices when it comes to managing their own budgets and savings in the future.
Over the past eighteen months, we have all seen how a ‘spend now-pay later’ attitude towards money has had a profound effect on some households. We firmly believe that helping youngsters learn about the importance of money management and saving is essential to giving them choices and easing their later transition into working life and adult life.”
In addition, The Children’s Mutual will be building on its own successful school workshops in Kent and Birmingham, with a further workshop at Lamberhurst St Mary’s Church of England (VC) Primary School, Kent during My Money Week. Sessions will be held with Year 6 pupils to encourage responsible attitudes to money by helping youngsters explore the decisions they may already make and will need to make in the future when it comes to money management.
The school workshops form part of The Children’s Mutual free resources for children and adults, including the children’s activity book, Making Sense of Money; The Essential Guide to Money for Parents and The Essential Guide to Childcare.
