Some 38 per cent of Britons are not aware of exactly how much money leaves their account in direct debits every month.
Research by MoneySupermarket has uncovered that over one-third of people have yet to sit down and take note of all their outgoings.
With 91 per cent of current account holders using direct debits to pay for bills, it is important that individuals understand how much they are spending in a four-week period so they do not leave themselves short.
The average monthly amount paid out in this fashion is £302, while 24 per cent see over £500 leave their account automatically every month.
Kevin Mountford, head of banking at MoneySupermarket, said: "Households face a huge number of outgoings which they may lose track of, therefore an automatic payment can help to keep on top of managing bills and avoid the issue of missing payments."
However, he added people need to make sure they stay on top of their outgoings and are not overpaying for any products.
