Parents need to appreciate the importance of healthy eating.
This is opinion of registered nutritionist Dr Carina Norris, who noted that despite many people understanding the importance of eating the right produce, many fail to apply the rules to their families.
Most individuals appreciate the requirement to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables every day, but they should also be aware of the value of a varied diet.
If parents fail to hammer home the healthy eating message to their children, then issues such as heart disease and diabetes could become more prevalent in the future.
"Childhood is so important because that is when a lot of our food habits are set and they can be either good or bad. It is hard to undo the habits of childhood when you're an adult," Dr Norris remarked.
Mums and dads need to make sure they limit the amount of sugar their children ingest, as this will damage their teeth and long-term health.
Change4Life recommends swapping the substance in drinks and snacks with options such as water, milk and unsalted nuts.
