Families should have a diet rich in antioxidants, vitamin D and calcium in order to protect their oral hygiene.
This is because Dr Dana Vieru York, a leading holistic and cosmetic dentist with a practice in Harley Street, noted such action will strengthen the bones in the mouth.
The National Institute of Clinical Excellence states that people should never go longer than 24 months without a check-up.
Dr York went further than this though, recommending a dental scale and polish every six months.
"Brush after every meal and floss regularly. Both can prevent the build-up of foods and plaque on the teeth that can stain them," she added.
The expert observed vitamin C is also important, as this will enhance the immune system and keep gums in a good condition.
Worryingly, Simplyhealth's Annual Dental Survey 2012 discovered that 36 per cent of mums and dads would not consider consulting their dentist for advice on oral hygiene for children.
