Some 87 per cent of consumers are expected to ration their energy usage this winter.
Research carried out by uSwitch.com has discovered the stark situation facing many individuals in the UK at the moment.
The government is due to unveil its Energy Bill today (November 23rd), which will outline any upcoming policies for the sector.
Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com, is calling on the coalition to make sure that people are made aware of what future investment is planned.
"It's important that consumers are made aware so they can take action to prepare for higher bills in the future and find information and support on how to limit the impact on their household," she added.
At present, the typical annual energy bill is £1,334 and most people cannot afford many more hikes in the cost of heating their properties.
Last year, 75 per cent of Britons went without energy for a period of time in an effort to keep their costs down.
