The Children’s Mutual is proud to be working with the Royal College of Midwives and its Alliance Programme to ensure the best for mothers and their babies.

The Alliance Programme was created in 2004 and has been designed to further support the activities of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) through a set of partnerships with commerical organisations. A core objective of the RCM is to protect and further the care provided by midwives for all mothers, newborns and their families, the Alliance has been created to further raise the profile of this essential work.

Partners in the Alliance Programme possess the same values as the Royal College of Midwives of trust, honesty and integrity and are working hard to advance the interests of midwives and the midwifery profession. In so doing, the Alliance strives to enhance the well-being of women, babies and their families.

This year The Children’s Mutual was proud to sponsor one of the annual RCM Midwifery Awards – Excellence in Partnership Working.

This award is for a project or development where midwives work in partnership with service users, user groups and other agencies including those in the health, social care and voluntary sectors to develop models of care built on principles of partnership, accountability and professional excellence.

The winning entry was ‘Working as one’ from Lynn Lynch MBE, Consultant Midwife and Helen Butler, Domestic Violence Coordinator, Cwm Taf NHS Trust. The award was presented to Lynn and Helen by Jenni Murray, Journalist and broadcaster with Andy Martin, Partner Account Director from The Children’s Mutual and Dame Cathy Warwick CBE, General Secretary, RCM.

Lynn and Helen looked to tackle the problem of domestic abuse with the Trust’s community services and partnership team launching a single integrated service for users and referring agencies. For people suffering from, or fearing domestic abuse, only one telephone call is now needed: the rest is done by the system. Partnership working has proved invaluable and provided opportunities for the midwife and pregnant woman to be involved together. Midwifery services and local midwives have been an integral part of this new development, identifying gaps in service provision for this vulnerable group. Work is now underway to try to break the cycle by working with abusers.

This project showed exceptional partnership working, ensures a seamless service and shows detailed planning to provide simple, tailored services to victims.
